OUR TOP 6 TYPOGRAPHIC GIFT PICKS ON THE FINDERS KEEPERS BLOG...

I was recently asked to give my top 6 indie TYPOGRAPHIC gift picks for THE FINDERS KEEPERS BLOG, OCTOBER GIFT GUIDE (first image below). It was a good little challenge, we even managed to get a couple of products in there from some of our AHD PAPER CO. artists, existing and to come.

We were also chuffed to have our greeting card 'YOU ARE AMAZING' (Chrissie Abbott for AHD) included in the TOP 6 PICKS by Sydney store LITTLE PAPER LANE. We love those folks and their gorgeous store, thank you!

EXHIBITION: 'WEAVES, PAINTING PAINTINGS' - BEN BARRETTO

This Thursday, October 25th, from 6pm - 8pm, is the Opening of BEN BARRETTO's new exhibition 'WEAVES, PAINTING PAINTINGS' at GALLERY A.S. by Joseph Allen Shea (located in the Old Paramount Pictures Building, 53-55 Brisbane Street, Surry Hills). It looks spectacular, and although we can't attend the opening (shame) we will be going along, as it's open from October 26th - November 10th, 12pm-6pm Wed-Sat.

As described in Broadsheet Sydney:

'This new series from Ben Barretto bring a much more defined art object to his often ephemeral performance, sound and installation practice, and illustrates a maturity and material sensitivity that mark Barretto’s returning from self-initiated residency in Los Angeles as an important early career Australian artist.

Developed from small quickly laid down sketches, the composition of his hand-made weaves are digitised to play with colour. This process along with the gridded method of weaving and the brilliance of the coloured ropes make these textiles appear as broken screens or corrupted digital image data.
Relying on materials available in building centres and hardware stores, Barretto instills the work with an interesting duality; the machismo and stout ruggedness of hard labour with the precision, sensitivity, earnestness and quietness of textile craft making.'

JIMMY, RICKY and MANGO...

Three darling cat portraits by AHD artist LILLY PIRI for one of our dearest friends, and fellow cat-mad lady, Rachel. Lilly's animal portraits were the inspiration behind her SERIES FOR AHD PAPER CO.

THIS SYDNEY HOME...

This light-filled Surry Hills apartment of  textile designer Gemma Cagnacci and architect Andrew Meehan is just delightful. It has all of the elements we Towns love in a home. If only we had crisp white walls, they always seem to make everything more pleasant... crisp white walls and a fourth cat, a Bengal just like 'Taj' below (just kidding, four cats would clearly be ridiculous, we can dream though).

CHRISTOPHER COOPER FOR TONG SARIN...

One of our original AHD artists is the incredibly talented illustrator, CHRISTOPHER COOPER. He has recently been involved in a project by photographer TONG SARIN, where he again is able to demonstrate his unbelievably precise, and extraordinarily beautiful illustrative skills.

'Tong Sarin recently embarked on creating an ingenious set of stationery that positions him as a photographer and director who really can facilitate the creative process. This mailer introduces Tong and provides creatives with a unique way to express themselves in the office environment.

I was tasked with illustrating and designing the instruction card that explains (and entirely justifies) the cheeky expletives printed in gold foil on the back of his business card.

GASTROPORN, NG ART GALLERY...

Two of our AHD PAPER CO. artists, BILLIE JUSTICE THOMSON and CHRIS TOWN are involved the GastroPorn Group Exhibition exhibition currently on at NG ART GALLERY, Chippendale, NSW.  Billie and Chris' work is being exhibited alongside artists such as Jasper Knight and Oliver Watts.

We also happen to be the proud new owners of this ICED VOVO.

'GastroPorn culminates a visual orgy of feasting and overindulgence from rich opulence to the dark gluttonous. Coinciding with SMH's CRAVE INTERNATIONAL FOOD FESTIVAL, 20 artists submit to an insatiable artistc hunger in the addiction, greed and want of food.'

STAY HOME CLUB...

One of our A HAPPY DEATH artists, OLIVIA MEW, has started her latest venture STAY HOME CLUBOlivia started the artist based textile company to provide a venue for ARTISTS AND ILLUSTRATORS to explore textiles as a medium. It's essentially what we do, but using textiles as the medium. She's done an absolutely beautiful job too. Pillowcases and textiles are digitally printed on 100% cotton in Canada, where Olivia resides. You can check out her website HERE, she has a store and ships worldwide. Well done Olivia...

DRIES Vs BH FOR AHD...

In addition to art and food, another love of mine, trawling close behind... is fashion. From all of the fashion weeks gone, and images from shows I've excitedly trawled through, DRIES VAN NOTEN SPRING 2013 RTW, remains my absolute favourite. I can't however put my finger on exactly what it was that made me swoon. Perhaps it's was his pairing of masculine against feminine? His subtle nod to the 90s? The glorious dynamic between pattern and cloth? His playful plaid play? OR quite simply those stark white Kurt Cobain-esque sunglasses together with that perfect-pout? What I do know is, for me, it made the ultimate moving cloth collage.

So in honor of his spectacular effort, I thought it might be fun to pair DRIES with AHD ARTIST BETH HOECKEL. Two of my favourite 'collage artists' side-by-side.

MARK DREW Vs DJ BACON...

We were a little bit slow to find this out, so imagine our surprise when a month after the event, we come across the flyer for the BRISBANE SEMI-PERMANENT OFFICIAL SIDESHOW and AFTER PARTY, and it had the work we commissioned from artist MARK DREW for his second series of cards with AHD!

Although this work was not featured in the exhibition curated by Benjamin Reeve, we are rather pleased it was in circulation on the poster, especially since those albums featured on the artwork are our hand-picked, favourite albums from the 90s.
